Year 2

Welcome to our Year 2 page. You can find out about all the exciting things we are learning about.

Spring Term:

Maths:

In maths this term we learnt all about money. We had to identify coins and notes, we also had to add amounts and calculate change! We also learnt all about multiplication and division. We have been working really hard to recall multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We then moved on to measure and learnt about measuring in lots of different units. We measured length and height in meters and centimetres, weight in grams and kilograms, capacity in millilitres and litres and temperature in degrees Celsius.

English:

This term our topic has been To Infinity and Beyond. We have learnt all about Neil Armstrong Mae Jemison. We first wrote news paper reports about Neil Armstrong. We pretended to be journalists and wrote a news paper report about the moon landing! We then learnt about Mae Jemison, she was the first African American woman to go to space. We asked her questions and told her all about what we had learnt about in school. We also read the story First Hippo on The Moon by David Walliams. We wrote our own version of the story and used our imaginations to changed the main character to a different animal. This term we also wrote a non fiction recount of Mae Jemisons first trip to space. We pretended to be her and wrote all about her life and how she became an astronaut. We then moved on to writing poetry and used onomatopoeia to write a poem about space!

Wider Curriculum:

We had a really exciting start to our topic To Infinity and Beyond, an alien rocket crash landed in the forest and we went out to investigate! We then created our own junk model rockets!

Autumn Term:

We have had a really exciting term!

Maths:

In maths we have been learning about place value, addition and subtraction and shape. We used the tens and ones to practically make numders to help us to understand the place value of 2 digit numbers. We also learnt how to add and subtract 2 digit numbers and even used this to help to problem solve! During our shape unit we explored the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We used this to help us to answer riddles and guess different shapes.

English:

In English we looked at the texts Zog by Julia Donaldson and George and The Dragon by Chris Wormell. We wrote character descriptions to describe Zog, we had to describe his looks and personality and used expanded noun phrases and conjunctions. We also wrote our own version of George and The Dragon, we changed the character George from a mouse to an animal of our choice. We then wrote Autumn poems for the Harvest Festival and instructions of how to train a dragon. After we visited Colchester Castle  we then learnt how to write captions, labels and lists and we had to label a castle, caption a picture of a castle and write a list of castle features. Don't forget that you need to use commas when writing a list!

Wider Curriculum:

Our topic this half term has been Troublesome Dragons. We started our topic with a dragon egg hunt in the forest! The eggs all had a letter on a spelt out a clue!

We also went on a school trip to Colchester Castle! It was so much fun, we learnt all about who would have lived in a castle and the features. We even got to go on the castle roof!
