Create a Joy in Learning For Every Child

Welcome to Year 1

Summer Term

We have now entered the final term of Year 1. Our topic this term is 'Paws Claws and Dinosaurs'.

In our English lessons we have been learning about fantasy stories and have been reading 'Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs'. In the story Harry finds a dusty box in the attic filled with dinosaurs. He fixes them and takes them everywhere in a bucket. One day he leaves them on the train but after a few days he finds them in lost property. As part of this English unit we have described the different characters in the story, described settings, thought about how different characters may feel and even created our own dinosaur characters. To end this unit we are going to be authors and write our own dinosaur story.

We have been very busy in Maths too and have learnt about multiplication and division. As part of this Maths topic we have learnt to count in steps of 2, 5 and 10. We then went on to link this to our times tables and found the answers to multiplication number sentences and problems.  We have also learnt about division and have learnt to share equally between 2, 5 and 10. We have worked very hard on developing our skills and have found the answers to division number sentences.  We have been very resilient when learning these skills and have not given up.

In Science we have learnt about both plants and animals. We have learnt that a plant needs sunlight, water, air and nutrients to grow. We planted our own sunflower seeds and watched them grow over several weeks. In the second half of the summer term we have learnt all bout animals. We have identified different animals, looked at their body parts and learnt all about what they eat. As part of our learning we sorted animals into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

In History we have learnt about an important lady called Mary Anning. Mary Anning  was born in 1799 and discovered fossils in the Jurassic fossil beds at Lyme Regis. She became recognised as one of the greatest fossil hunters ever! As part of our learning, we learnt all about her life, sequenced events and wrote non-chronological reports about her.

Spring Term

Our topic this half term is called ‘Superheroes in the Big City’.  To start this amazing topic we had a Superhero day where we got to come to school dressed as a superhero and complete a range of superhero activity. We created our own Superhero passports, made our own masks, wrote messages and lots more!

In our English lessons we have been learning about adventure stories. We have been reading a book called ‘Charlie’s Superhero Underpants’. In this story Charlie’s scarlet underpants blow away in the wind. He goes on an adventure to find them and when he does, he finds that a yeti is wearing them. We have learnt to use adjectives to add description, describe characters and settings, created our own character and write our own adventure story.

At the start of the term we learnt about 3D shapes. We identified the names and properties of lots of 3D shapes and then sorted them. We even got to make them using cocktails ticks and marshmallows. It was very fun! In our addition and subtraction units, we have learnt how to use a number line to support our calculations. We created our own Steps to Success for jumping along the number line and learnt that we must jump carefully.

In Science we have been learning about the human body. We have names our body parts and found which sense is associated with which body part.  We have also learnt about what each part of our body can do and what happens of one of our senses is impaired. We were very curious and asked lots of questions about our body.

Autumn Term

Cherry and Cedar have had a great start to Year 1 and have been busy settling into new routines.

In English we have been learning about ‘The Blue Balloon’ written by our author of the term, Mick Inkpen. We have been reading a little bit of the story at a time and have been developing our understanding of what skills are needed to be an author. To start our learning we made a prediction about what we thought the story could be about. There were some fantastic ideas! These included using the balloon to fly to space, the little boy popping the balloon and the dog biting the balloon. We have also learnt to use adjectives to describe characters, thought about feelings and used conjunctions to expand our sentences.

We have also been busy in Maths too and have been learning all about place value. We have found different ways to sort objects, found 1 more and 1 less and learnt about greater than and less than. As part of our Maths Meetings we have been learning the days of the week and the months of the year. We have also been developing our counting skills each day.

In RE we have been learning about why we are special, special people in our family and in the community. We made thank you cards and wrote about why people are special.
