Autumn term
English
This term in English, we have been perfecting our foundational writing skills. Making sure every sentence begins with a capital letter, has correct finger spaces and ends with a full stop. We have been working hard on our presentation and trying hard to form all our letters correctly.
Our writing has been based on the story Zog. We have been writing a detailed character description of Zog, focusing on his appearance and personality. We have been trying to add more adjectives and conjunctions to our sentences to make them more interesting.
Maths
In maths this term we have been busy developing our understanding of place value. We used tens and ones equipment to practically make numbers, helping us to identify the value of each digit in a two-digit number. We have been partitioning numbers in different ways and using different models to illustrate this (part whole, ten frames). We have also been counting in our 10s and 2s.
Wider curriculum
Our topic this term is troublesome dragons, and we have been doing exciting learning based on castles and dragons. On our first day, we launched our topic by drawing castles and dragons on our playground, and finding and unscrambling dragon eggs to spell out the word Burrsville.
In Dt we have been learning about the purpose of towers and researched our local towers e.g. Martello tower. In class, we have designed and made our own towers and tried to make them tall, strong and freestanding.
In science, we have been exploring the properties of materials and thinking about what material outside games are made from. We set up our own experiment making rings out of different materials for the ring toss game and investigating which material worked best.
We have also taken part in one of our 7 before 7 promises by supporting a Macmillian coffee morning in school. This event contributed towards our Caring Campaigner promise. The children had fun and confidently served cake to a relative or friend.
